Show Us Your High-Mileage Jeep® Brand Vehicle!

The former Jeep® 4.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine has made a name for itself as one of the most reliable engines, and we’ve seen some pretty high-mileage Jeep brand vehicles on-road and off- with that workhorse under the hood. But owner Jan Richey and his 1988 Jeep Cherokee take the cake in that department. Richey has over 612,000 miles on his Cherokee with the original engine still humming along. There have been a few modifications along the way, but by and large, his vehicle looks just as clean as the day it rolled out of the factory.

We’re sure Richey isn’t alone when it comes to owning a high-mileage Jeep brand vehicle, which is why we want to hear all about your long-in-the-tooth beast. Tell us the story of your vehicle in the comments section below. If you have photos to share, send them in through our Flickr page with the title “HIGH MILEAGE JEEP SERIES” so we know where they belong. We’ll be featuring the best tales right here.

I own a 94 and 96 xj Cherokees with 4.0’s. my 94 has about 170,000 on it and still runs like new. my 96 only has 83,000 on it so it will probably still be running for a long time. the jeep 4.0 is the toughest engine I’ve ever owned.its sad to think how many good 4.0’s were lost to cash for clunkers.if its not a jeep 4.0 I don’t wont it.

  • Julie Claus

I am a proud owner of a 2000 grand cherokee limited 4.7 liter with 326000 miles. Done regular maintenance. Best vehicle I’ve ever purchased!

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee SE 2-Door, 2-Wheel Drive, 4.0L Six Cylinder with the 5-Speed Standard Transmission and the most major repair on I have done to date in 242,431 miles is a Clutch back in 2007. This Jeep has been the most reliable thing I have ever seen and certainly the longest lasting vehicle I have ever owned…I’ll be keeping it for a very long time! What a treasure…Plus, not lots of two doors around either.

  • Aaron

Had a 91 cherokee with over 250k before I sold it and bought my young 2001 grand cherokee with just 113k in June now has 120k I’ll have it for a LONG time still.

  • Guy Peters

My 1999 Cherokee has 340,000 on the 4.0L six cylinder with 5 speed manual transmission. Still with the original clutch. I bought it new. It certainly has served me well. It still runs great!

  • Justin

I’m the proud owner of a 1997 xj Cherokee 4.0 with 147,000 miles, its just a baby compared to others on this list! It still runs like new, with only general maintenance. I’m a college freshman and got it passed down from my mom my junior year in high school, who bought it used in 1999 with 20,000 miles. It’s been the best car our family has ever had and couldn’t give it enough praise.

  • Rachel

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo, with 300,000 miles on it. Bought it in 2005 with 75,000. Only thing motor wise was the water pump and fan. Original motor and tranny. Replaced several tie-rod ends, CV joint. I live where it gets very cold in the winter, and no matter how cold it is, my Jeep starts right up.

  • kk

i gat 353k on my 99 grand cherokee 4.0 no problems and straight pipes!

  • Denny Moore

  • bob

1987 Cherokee 4L 5 speed, 210K miles. Car has been an uncomfortable piece of crap since it was brand new – leaked water, stunk, dealer couldn’t fix it. The only good thing I can say is it rides and runs exactly as it did when it was new – bumpy, noisy, uncomfortable and smelly.

  • kaleb

Got a 98 jeep grand cherokee laredo with 219, 000 miles on it. Needs a little love but still is a beast. Anybody know how much a transmission swap runs?

  • argon blade

  • mark griffith

I have a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with a 40 over 273,000 been a bit of a pain in the ass just because of someone else has worked on itpeople don’t realize that that’s actually low mileage on them I’ve been trying to sell it for $2000 interior looks like brand new minimal rust a few small dents it’s worth more than 2000I had one jackass offer me a$1000 I couldn’t help but laugh

  • Kim Drennan

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 305,000 miles and have had no engine problems! I got it when it was 6 months old with 14,000 miles on it! It’s been such a great vechile for me!

  • BoundlessJoy

I purchased a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo 4×4, (I6 engine), with 74,000 miles on it. Its still humming along smoothly at 257,000. I looooove this car. I’ve had the usual replacements for brakes rotors etc. I use synthetic high mileage oil and have it changed regularly, that’s it. I’ll be purchasing another Jeep cherokee, (no later model than a 2006, I understand they did away with the 4.0/i6 engine after 2006). This is my second jeep. I traded in my 1996 Jeep with 147,000 miles on it. I was afraid of the high mileage, ( I had no idea what a great engine it was. I blame youth). I fully intend to get a couple hundred thousand more miles on this car. Its so reliable!

  • Randy Piland

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4.0L, automatic which I bought new. It just turned 345,000 miles. Original engine and transmission but have had to replace the radiator and numerous starters and water pumps through the years. Even siege up a value one-time but after continuing to drive it, the value released and it’s been running good since. That was 185,000 miles ago. Would love to drive it across country for a trip but concerned about that distance at such high mileage. Anyone upgraded theirs to get some assurance to travel long distances worry free?

  • Ted Dahlin

Have 2000 grand cherokee limited 4.7 256,800 miles engine still runs strong original exhaust pipes and muffler.

  • Ali

I have a 91 Jeep Cherokee. Best damn thing I ever bought. Original motor with 271,898 miles of this minute and still going strong. No real problems along the way and almost runs like new. Super dependable, never lets me down even on long trips. It’s my baby.

  • Killa Cam

1996 jeep grand Cherokee. 260600 miles. Just replaced the water pump and that’s it other than oil changes. There are cosmetic problems though….that damned headliner.

  • DBH

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4.7 liter with 305,000 miles

  • Matthew Schmidt

My 97 grand cherokee has 333420 miles on her.

  • Tom

My 96 Cherokee sport just rolled 260,000 and is still going strong! It goes to my son when he hits 16. Meanwhile its still drives, 4x4s and is my primary workhorse. I can’t say enough about the 4.0 inline six engine, it’s very low maintenance. I have not had to do any work to the engine, just keep up on oil changes and routine maintenance.

  • Harley

99 WJ grand Cherokee, just hit 301,000

  • Guest

Just bought a 95 jeep Grand Cheroke Laredo today with 183k on it. First jeep I have ever owned.

  • Allan Conner

230,00 on 2005 Grand Cherokee. Original engine and original transmission. Changed oil every 5000 to 7000 miles. I never changed the transmission fluid.I use Lucas products in the engine. This jeep runs as good as the day I bought it new!

  • Scott

Hey I am looking at purchasing a 1999-2003 Jeep Wrangler they all have about 150,000 to 180,000 miles. How much life you think would be left in the I4 verses the I6? Thanks

  • Jacob

1990 4.0 RENIX XJ 2WD AW4 transmission. It was bought new and now sits at 345,000 miles. I am the only owner. BONE STOCK. Never altered. Never any engine or transmission problems. Replaced numerous staters, alternators, and water pumps. Have driven the car so long, that people know its me just by looking at the car. RENIX XJs are now becoming less common on the road. You hardly ever see them anymore.

  • Llori

I have had half a dozen jeep vehicles over the last 25 years and enjoyed them all (Comanche, Wrangler, CherokeeX2, Liberty, and current Wrangler). Purchased the 2008 Wrangler new (March 2008) and just rolled to 300,000 miles last week. Looks almost new, can’t see any rust and haven’t had any significant issues. Wouldn’t drive anything else!

  • Joaquin

I’m looking to buy a 2007 jeep cherokee v6 with 81k miles. Looking to spend about 7k for it. How is maintenance on these guys, Ive herd good and bad. Lots of transmission and shifting out of gears problems. Can anyone give personal experiences or thoughts on this. Is this a good buy?

  • Brenda

It is great to read. I ordered by 2000 Jeep from the factory and picked it up in May 2000. I had no clue what Jeep was about just like the way the Grand Cherokee looked. I now have 308,000 miles on it and counting. I drive it 50 miles round trip a day to work and it looks and drive exactly like it did the day I picked it up from the dealer’s lot. Had 5 miles on it when I got it and I was mad it had 5. I love my Jeep!!!!!!

  • TLC

1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo just got to 325,000 miles today. Best car ever owned!

  • DZW

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7l v8. 242K miles and there’s no distance I wouldn’t dare to drive it. Body and undercarriage are in awesome shape and the engine is still strong. Shooting for 300+ by year end.

This made me laugh, I may have missed this post by a few years but I grew up in my 91 jeep and my mother gifted it to me. Just nearing the 290k mark and running strong just need to get the poor girl a new passenger window vent after a thief broke it.
I hope she makes it to the 600k mark too!
