Show Us Your High-Mileage Jeep® Brand Vehicle!

The former Jeep® 4.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine has made a name for itself as one of the most reliable engines, and we’ve seen some pretty high-mileage Jeep brand vehicles on-road and off- with that workhorse under the hood. But owner Jan Richey and his 1988 Jeep Cherokee take the cake in that department. Richey has over 612,000 miles on his Cherokee with the original engine still humming along. There have been a few modifications along the way, but by and large, his vehicle looks just as clean as the day it rolled out of the factory.

We’re sure Richey isn’t alone when it comes to owning a high-mileage Jeep brand vehicle, which is why we want to hear all about your long-in-the-tooth beast. Tell us the story of your vehicle in the comments section below. If you have photos to share, send them in through our Flickr page with the title “HIGH MILEAGE JEEP SERIES” so we know where they belong. We’ll be featuring the best tales right here.

  2. I own a 94 and 96 xj Cherokees with 4.0’s. my 94 has about 170,000 on it and still runs like new. my 96 only has 83,000 on it so it will probably still be running for a long time. the jeep 4.0 is the toughest engine I’ve ever owned.its sad to think how many good 4.0’s were lost to cash for clunkers.if its not a jeep 4.0 I don’t wont it.

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee SE 2-Door, 2-Wheel Drive, 4.0L Six Cylinder with the 5-Speed Standard Transmission and the most major repair on I have done to date in 242,431 miles is a Clutch back in 2007. This Jeep has been the most reliable thing I have ever seen and certainly the longest lasting vehicle I have ever owned…I’ll be keeping it for a very long time! What a treasure…Plus, not lots of two doors around either.

Any problems with window regulators or anything like that? Looking at one of these as I just totaled my 04

  14. I’m the proud owner of a 1997 xj Cherokee 4.0 with 147,000 miles, its just a baby compared to others on this list! It still runs like new, with only general maintenance. I’m a college freshman and got it passed down from my mom my junior year in high school, who bought it used in 1999 with 20,000 miles. It’s been the best car our family has ever had and couldn’t give it enough praise.

  15. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo, with 300,000 miles on it. Bought it in 2005 with 75,000. Only thing motor wise was the water pump and fan. Original motor and tranny. Replaced several tie-rod ends, CV joint. I live where it gets very cold in the winter, and no matter how cold it is, my Jeep starts right up.

  18. 1987 Cherokee 4L 5 speed, 210K miles. Car has been an uncomfortable piece of crap since it was brand new – leaked water, stunk, dealer couldn’t fix it. The only good thing I can say is it rides and runs exactly as it did when it was new – bumpy, noisy, uncomfortable and smelly.

I purchased a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo 4×4, (I6 engine), with 74,000 miles on it. Its still humming along smoothly at 257,000. I looooove this car. I’ve had the usual replacements for brakes rotors etc. I use synthetic high mileage oil and have it changed regularly, that’s it. I’ll be purchasing another Jeep cherokee, (no later model than a 2006, I understand they did away with the 4.0/i6 engine after 2006). This is my second jeep. I traded in my 1996 Jeep with 147,000 miles on it. I was afraid of the high mileage, ( I had no idea what a great engine it was. I blame youth). I fully intend to get a couple hundred thousand more miles on this car. Its so reliable!

I have a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, 4.0L, automatic which I bought new. It just turned 345,000 miles. Original engine and transmission but have had to replace the radiator and numerous starters and water pumps through the years. Even siege up a value one-time but after continuing to drive it, the value released and it’s been running good since. That was 185,000 miles ago. Would love to drive it across country for a trip but concerned about that distance at such high mileage. Anyone upgraded theirs to get some assurance to travel long distances worry free?

1996 jeep grand Cherokee. 260600 miles. Just replaced the water pump and that’s it other than oil changes. There are cosmetic problems though….that damned headliner.

  29. My 96 Cherokee sport just rolled 260,000 and is still going strong! It goes to my son when he hits 16. Meanwhile its still drives, 4x4s and is my primary workhorse. I can’t say enough about the 4.0 inline six engine, it’s very low maintenance. I have not had to do any work to the engine, just keep up on oil changes and routine maintenance.

  33. 1990 4.0 RENIX XJ 2WD AW4 transmission. It was bought new and now sits at 345,000 miles. I am the only owner. BONE STOCK. Never altered. Never any engine or transmission problems. Replaced numerous staters, alternators, and water pumps. Have driven the car so long, that people know its me just by looking at the car. RENIX XJs are now becoming less common on the road. You hardly ever see them anymore.

Purchased the 2008 Wrangler new (March 2008) and just rolled to 300,000 miles last week. Looks almost new, can’t see any rust and haven’t had any significant issues. Wouldn’t drive anything else!

It is great to read. I ordered by 2000 Jeep from the factory and picked it up in May 2000. I had no clue what Jeep was about just like the way the Grand Cherokee looked. I now have 308,000 miles on it and counting. I drive it 50 miles round trip a day to work and it looks and drive exactly like it did the day I picked it up from the dealer’s lot. Had 5 miles on it when I got it and I was mad it had 5. I love my Jeep!!!!!!

This made me laugh, I may have missed this post by a few years but I grew up in my 91 jeep and my mother gifted it to me. Just nearing the 290k mark and running strong just need to get the poor girl a new passenger window vent after a thief broke it.
I hope she makes it to the 600k mark too!
