Each Friday on the Jeep® Blog, we explore the Jeep brand’s iconic heritage by highlighting a different historical vehicle. This week’s vehicle is the 1984–1991 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SJ).

Not true for the Jeep® Grand Wagoneer (SJ). With its iconic wood paneling and rugged design, once you saw it driving down the trail, up the mountain or even down Main Street, you could hardly forget it.

Instead of being a vehicle of firsts, the Grand Wagoneer was in the position of being one of lasts. As the Jeep brand transferred the Wagoneer and Cherokee names to small unibody platforms, the SJ Wagoneer was preserved as a full-size SUV under the “Grand Wagoneer” moniker.

Not to be taken lightly, it was one of the most luxurious vehicles in production, affectionately known as the golden standard in the SUV market. With car manufacturers producing smaller mid-size SUVs, there just wasn’t room for a full-size anymore.

The end of an era was signaled without a lot of fanfare, with 1991 Grand Wagoneer models featuring a “Final Edition” badge on their dashboards. Do you remember the first time you saw or rode in this classic Jeep vehicle? Tell us your favorite memories in the comments section below.

I have been rocking Full Size Jeeps since 1976. There is only One Jeep. The last carburetor Jeep. The grampa’s station wagon. The gas guzzler. Carry On!

My family loves the old FSJ’s and we had quite a few growing up. My first Jeep was a 1976 2 door Cherokee, and my last FSJ was 1988 Grand Wagoneer I lifted and installed 33′s. I loved that old Jeep. My favorite all time FSJ is the stepside from the movie Tremors. I’ll watch that movie again and again just to see that Jeep.

Yahoo Auto hinted that there would be a 2014 Grand Wagoneer — has there been any official release? I checked the main site and got nothing.

I could afford some really nice cars, but my daily driver is a restored 1989 Grand Waggy. Nuff’ said!

The first Jeep I ever drove was a Wagoneer when I was 14 on my grandpa’s ranch. However it was a ’78. It was so much fun. I’ve always thought about owning a Grand Wagoneer… (hint hint Jeep).

First time I rode in this jeep, was when I test drove it. Love my 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer! We bought it to pull our 1962 Airstream, and then just never got them together. It’s just like the one in this picture, only needs some work now. And it’s for sale. We do pre-1840 rendezvous ‘camping’, the mountain man era, and this jeep would hold our lodge, and ALL of our paraphernalia with no worries. Love the looks we’d always get driving it down the road.
