Jeep® Heritage | 1963 Jeep Wagoneer

1963 Jeep Wagoneer

Each Friday on the Jeep® Blog, we explore the Jeep brand’s iconic heritage by highlighting a different historical vehicle. This week’s vehicle is the 1963 Jeep Wagoneer.

The 1963 Jeep Wagoneer was a revelation in luxury, innovation, and industry firsts (not unlike a certain award-winning luxury SUV from today). It was the father of all luxury 4×4 SUVs, with passenger-car styling, comfort, and convenience and the advantages of four-wheel drive.

The revolutionary Jeep Wagoneer was a pioneer, with industry firsts such as:

  • The first automatic transmission in a 4×4 vehicle
  • The first overhead-cam six cylinder truck engine
  • The first 4×4 vehicle with an independent front suspension
  • The first automatic full-time 4WD system

Originally available in two- and four-door body styles, the Wagoneer’s styling was modern and refreshing. Its impact? Legendary. The Jeep Wagoneer was the original luxury SUV.

Today, the Jeep Grand Cherokee continues the Jeep brand’s lineage of manufacturing groundbreaking vehicles that can Go Anywhere, Do Anything™.

Dreaming of time past with my jeep and natures path. White Christmas and trials of snow and adventure ahead.

  3. I’ve owned a CJ-5, CJ-7 which are my favorite then bought a brand new1997 Jeep Wangler…seems like they weren’t made as tough as the earlier models but still had the same style even with the new round head lights. I taught all my children how to drive a clutch on the 1997 and the battery in that didn’t go bad until 2007…10 years later. Jeeps are definitely made to LAST! Only thing I had to replace along with the battery was the soft top. Gotta love Jeeps!! :)

The description of the 1963 Wagoneer made me laugh. Luxurious? I learned to drive in one of these. It had a 3 speed on the column. The hubs were manual and really hard to turn especially in frigid temps and deep snow. The seat coverings were plastic and stiff and hard in cold weather. All other interior surfaces were metal. The tires were nylon bias ply and felt like concrete blocks until warm. I don’t recall even an AM radio in it. No carpet of course. The 6 cylinder engine was weak. I greatly enjoyed this vehicle and would enjoy having another, but it was not luxurious!
